[Mac] modem/PPP/QuickCam performance?

I regret that over 3 some years of reading this list (how's that for
dedication?!), I never paid much attention to modem problems, as I wallowed
in the luxury of an Ethernet + T3 connection to the Internet. As I now try
to make my way in the world on the end of a 28.8 modem, I'm running into
major performance problems with CU-SeeMe, and am hoping some kind soul can
show me the way.

If I try to transmit video with a QuickCam, it works, but my machine gets
severely bogged down, to the point where key strokes and mouse clicks take
several seconds or more to register. If I Connect To Self, there is no
problem, and if I pause video while using the modem, performance seems
okay, so it seems like a QuickCam-modem conflict.

Has anyone else experienced this kind of problem? I'm guessing the problem
is with PPP or maybe with my system serial port access. I have:

Power Mac 7200/90
System 7.5.3
FreePPP 1.05
USRobotic Sportster, 28.8 V.34 & 33.6
QuickCam with latest vdig

Any suggestions? Has anyone with a similar configuration managed
reasonable transmission rates (e.g., > 5 kbps) with CU-SeeMe? Many thanks
in advance.
