"Stop Receiving" Doesn't Stop Data Transmission

Sorry if this is common knowledge...I just figured it out tonight.

If you are lurking on the Cornell reflector via SLIP connection, watching
one image (Lilly, I think it was), and turn off the Send and Receive
checkboxes in the Audio window, and set the menu item to Stop Receiving,
the image displays the subtitle "Not Receiving."

However, the I/O light on the 14.4K modem continues to flicker constantly,
indicating that data is continuing to flow at about the same rate as when
you were in Receive mode. This is with no camera or video board connected
to the Mac, running CU-See Me version PPc0.70b14.

I found that CU-SeeMe was just about useless over my SLIP connection. Does
anyone "successfully" use CUSM with a 14.4 modem?
