To be upward compatible with a phone conversation (human interaction)

As computing power increases CUSM should at least be able to communicate
voice & video over 28K8 modems (more compression...?) With the emphasis on
voice

For hurds of (potential) users, 28k8 (maybe 30+ in future) is the most
bandwidth they can afford

I (as a home user) am willing to spend money on more (general) computing
power than on ISDN (for now :)!!

Maybe this should also go to maven polemics
