power macs, unix programs

I have been looking for the best choice for a new machine that
would be used (along with lots of other things) for running CU-SeeMe.
Have folks had experience with the Power Mac av machines? If so,
how well do they work, on an absolute scale, and compared to the
other choices?

In another effort, is there information on the protocols used
for transmitting and compressing/decompressing the image data? I
am looking for the information to build a unix viewer. I have
heard of nv, but have not been able to find it.

p.s. kind of unrelated, but does anyone have any info they could
share on how to do frame grabs in software for a RasterOps 364,
instead of relying on their software?
