Hi Folks

Let me introduce myself. My name is Martyne Hallgren, Assistant
Director for Technology and Service Evaluation and Development at
Cornell. The CU-SeeMe project is now part of my group. If you
recognize my name, its because I've been the director for the
CU-SeeMe Consortium and the contact for source licences.

There's been considerable discussion on the list about the future of
the free version of CU-SeeMe, what features will be in the next
version, if there will be a next version, etc etc.
Let me assure you that free CU-SeeMe will continue - Cornell (and
I represent Cornell now) is not going to let it simply fade away .. But as
you know, the entire development team has gone on to other adventures.
As a result, I'm hard at work at pulling together another team of folks
to work on CU-SeeMe from now on.

Which brings me to cu-seeme'rs around the net who are currently
passing around the latest alpha versions. I'm sure you have the best
of intentions but I would greatly appreciate that you stop distributing
copies of these. I appreciate your enthusiasm and support for the program,
but I'm sure you understand that having uncontrolled release of
alpha code is taking away time that is better spent on putting together
the team who will get the next real release out. I have contacted some
folks directly about stopping their distribution and I want to
thank them for their prompt action and support.

The alpha copies that are out now were originally put into the hands of
a limited number of folks to assist in debugging, something that is
a standard practice. We've just recently found some incompatibilities
with some reflectors that need to be resolved before anything goes into
wide distribution.

In addition, I do not believe that releasing
software, even free software, without a support team to deal
with unexpected problems is a responsible course of action for Cornell
to take and I will not do this.

This is a transition period for everyone which makes everyone think
the worst, of course!! but let me assure you, I am committed to
keeping CU-SeeMe and the CU-SeeMe Community (that's you guys!) alive
and well.. its going to take a little bit of time to get things
organized, but in the end, the next release of Cornell's
CU-SeeMe will be worth the wait..

See you on the Net..
