"unable to digitize" when it should be able to

I've seen mention of this problem before, but at the time I wasn't having
it, so I don't remember the solution.

I get something like "CU-SeeMe finds a VDIG, but is unable to digitize.
Continue in receive only mode?"
If I start up "Video Monitor" (to test that everything is indeed working
right), and then quit and try
CU-SeeMe again, everything proceeds without a hitch.

Can someone tell me what's going on, and what do about it?
