YOU ARE INVITED TO EXPERIENCE
TELEPRESENCE ART ON THE INTERNET
(IP 128.163.13.2)

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 23, 1994
FROM 1 PM TO 6 PM CENTRAL TIME

ORNITORRINCO IN EDEN
A Networked Telepresence Installation
by Eduardo Kac and Ed Bennett

This piece bridges the placeless space of the Internet with actual spaces
in Seattle (WA), Chicago (IL), and Lexington (KY). The piece consists of
these three nodes of active participation and multiple nodes of observation
worldwide. In this telepresence installation, the telerobot Ornitorrinco
(Platypus, in Portuguese) in Chicago is controlled simultaneously by
participants in Lexington and Seattle. The remote participants share the
body of Ornitorrinco. Via the Internet, they see the remote installation
through Ornitorrinco's eye (using CUSeeMe). They control the telerobot
simultaneously via a regular telephone link (three-way conference call) in
real-time. Communication takes place not through verbal or oral exchange
but through the rhythms that result from their engagement in a shared
mediated experience. Viewers and participants are invited to experience an
invented remote space from a perspective other than their own. As the piece
is experienced through the Internet, anybody in the world with Internet
access can see it, dissolving gallery boundaries and making the work
accessible to larger audiences.

E. Kac and E. Bennett have been working collaboratively on telepresence
installations since 1989. "Ornitorrinco in Copacabana" was presented at the
Siggraph Art Show, in Chicago, in 1992. "Ornitorrinco on the Moon" was
presented between The School of the Art Institute (Chicago) and the museum
Kunstlerhaus (Graz, Austria). "Ornitorrinco in Eden" is part of the
interactive art festival "Beyond Fast Forward" organized by Northwest
CyberArtists and 911 Media Arts (at the Seattle Center, in Seattle, WA). It
is also part of E. Kac's solo show at the Center for Contemporary Art,
University of Kentucky, Lexington.
