GIS for the 21st Century Community College Training Program
Indiana State University - Summer 1996, June 10 -28, 1996

Tuition and Enrollment

The summer program is available for six graduate credit hours of Geography 550. All students will be charged the in-state tuition rate of $125.50 per credit hour for a total of $753.00.

If you are not applying to a Master's or Ph.d. graduate program at Indiana State University, you will be admitted as an "Unclassified" student. As an "Unclassified" student, you will be able to take the institute for credit without having to pay certain fees associated with the regular graduate program. It will also allow you to bypass some of the usual paperwork required for enrollment in the University's graduate program.

Enclosed is the enrollment form that must be completed and returned to us by May 22, 1996. We also expect tuition payment at that time. If payment of tuition by May 22, 1996 is a problem, please call us by that date so that arrangements for payment can be made.

If you are interested in a degree program offered through the Department of Geography, Geology and Anthropology, please contact us for information and forms.

Housing

Housing will be arranged in Lincoln Quadrangles about two blocks from the Science Building where instruction will take place. Although rooms in Lincoln Quad are arranged in suites, it is still considered a dormitory setting. Each suite has a living room, two bathrooms with showers, two private bedrooms, and two sun rooms. (The sun rooms are made to convert to private bedrooms.) Each suite can comfortably house four single participants or two couples. Each suite is air conditioned. Bed linens and pillows are provided. There are no televisions and radios in the rooms. Laundry facilities are available in Lincoln Quad.

Each participant seeking University housing must complete the enclosed Housing Contract. We would like to have the completed housing contract returned to us with payment (if appropriate) by May 22, 1996.

Four participants will be assigned to a suite. If you have a roommate preference, please note the person's name on the housing contract. We will do our best to accommodate all requests, but we cannot guarantee roommate arrangements.

If you are attending the workshop and bringing a spouse, please notify us as soon as possible so that we can mail you an additional housing contract. The cost of housing for the significant other will be $366.00 plus 5% sales tax (unless your spouse is also taking classes at Indiana State University).

Please note that each participant (as well as any spouse who may be attending) is responsible for bringing their own towels, washcloths, and toiletries. Blankets are normally not provided in the summer, but we are making special arrangements so that blankets will be available.

You may check into your room at Lincoln Quad after 12:00 (noon) on Sunday, June 9, 1996.

Food

Meals will be furnished in the Lincoln Quad dining hall. Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be served Monday through Friday. Brunch and dinner are served on Saturdays and Sundays. The cost for meals is included in the cost of housing, and a meal card will be included in the packet of materials you receive when you check into Lincoln Quad. The meal cards are good beginning at breakfast, Monday, June 10, and ending after dinner, Friday, June 28.

Please note that no meals have been arranged for Sunday, June 9, 1996. The Commons area of Indiana State University has several fast food restaurants and snack bars that are open until 7:00 p.m. each evening. Anything purchased at the Commons is separate from the meal card and must be paid for by cash. If you arrive after 7:00 p.m., you will need to go off-campus if you want to eat a meal. Vending machines with snack items are available at Lincoln Quad, but will not change dollar bills.

Completion of Final Registration and Forms

Final completion of registration and forms will take place beginning at 7:30 a.m. to about 9:00 a.m. on Monday, June 10. Participants and instructors receiving stipend or compensation must bring with them appropriate documentation for completion of I-9 forms - passport OR original social security card and picture ID OR certified birth certificate and picture ID

Ground Transportation

If you are coming to the workshop via the Indianapolis International Airport, there is a shuttle that runs between the airport and Terre Haute seven days a week. The shuttle, an 11-passenger van, is provided by Turner Bus of Terre Haute and is not associated with the University. The shuttle leaves the airport each day at 7:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 3:30 p.m., and 8:40 p.m. and passengers disembark at Turner Tours on Margaret Avenue in Terre Haute. The cost for the shuttle is $38.00 round-trip or $22.00 one-way.

If there is enough interest in the shuttle, we can arrange to have participants brought to Indiana State instead of dropping them at Turner Tours. We have enclosed a questionnaire asking about your travel arrangements so that we can make your trip to Terre Haute as painless as possible.

Social Activities (Network Building) and Mental Well-being

The Indiana State University campus lies just north of the downtown Terre Haute area, which in summers and especially weekends can be rather quiet. Instruction and related activities will take place in a computer building and the Science Building. Both buildings are next to a central courtyard with water fountain and areas to sit. The Commons area (described in the food section above) is just steps away from both buildings. The composite result of the setting is that for many of you, the feeling may be one of a retreat. There will be excellent opportunity and places for you to get to know the other participants and talk over common problems. Evenings and most of the two weekends are open for discussion, working on assignments, further exploring GIS systems, looking through resource material, reading suggested GIS references, or just decompressing from a day's instruction. A number of social activities will be scheduled, including one the first Sunday evening. On Friday's and weekends we are also working on options so that you can get from the relatively quite downtown/campus area to other locations in Terre Haute for shopping and entertainment. We can also try to accommodate other needs or ideas as they arise.

Expectations of participants

It is expected that all participants are here to learn about GIS so that they can return to their home institutions to incorporate GIS into existing courses, design new courses, or devise GIS programs. We have several categories of participants and some differences on whether graduate credit is being taken or not. Regardless of circumstance, we will expect the same participation and involvement of all involved which includes the benefits of the work in the coming year. No prior knowledge of GIS will be assumed. Participants are expected to arrive having completed an preliminary inventory of GIS employers in their local areas. You do NOT need to arrive with data or a project, but if you have a project in mind, you are welcome to bring these materials. Each instructor is being asked to prepare one or two simple exercises, problems, or questions that the participant will complete and return to the instructor for evaluation and comment. Learning will be reinforced and you will have a chance to evaluate whether you understand the material. Except for a couple special presentations, instructors are also participants for the three weeks and will be available for questions. During the first and second weeks, afternoon labs will begin with training, but will continue with laboratory exercises that will involve final products that will be turned in. Week three will be an opportunity for a mini-application or project that can be completed within about 12 hours. By the last day of the program, participants from each represented institution will develop objectives and a work plan for their work with incorporating GIS at their home institution. Much of the final afternoon will be used to discuss these plans.
